30 Days of the Sacred Heart, Day 30

|

Image credit: icon of the Sacred Heart of Jesus, possibly written by Marek Czarnicki

An internet friend posted this but didn't know anything about it. Google image search is kind of useless these days, but there are a dozen Pinterest posts that attribute this to iconographer Marek Czarnicki and link to his site -- which doesn't have this image, though it does have other icons in this style.

Still a nice image to close out the month.

I don't like this one nearly as much as my favorite Sacred Heart image, also by Desvallieres. But it's interesting. Click the link and zoom in.

I just ran across this one this week and I love it, but alas don't know anything about it. The person who took it doesn't even remember where she took it.

30 Days of the Sacred Heart, Solemnity Day & the End of Roe!

Happy Feast Day!

there will be more joy in heaven over one sinner who repents than over ninety-nine righteous people who have no need of repentance. ~ Luke 15:7

Update: It's no accident that SCOTUS just overturned Roe this morning, on the Solemnity of the Sacred Heart but also the day that every other year is the Birthday of John the Baptist, who recognized the Lord in the womb.

This is like the fall of the Berlin Wall. I heard the news and literally wept aloud and unashamedly for joy. I know there will be ugliness and state-level fights to come. But the liberation has begun. This is our Emancipation Proclamation. Onward to Juneteenth.

Sacred Heart Novena, Day 9

Thou comprehendest all I need, dear Lord!
To win my heart, from heaven Thou didst come;
For me Thy blood didst shed, O King adored!
And on our altars makest Thy home.
So, if I may not here behold Thy Face,
Or catch the heav’nly music of Thy Voice,
I still can live, each moment, by Thy grace,
And in Thy Sacred Heart I can rejoice.
~Excerpt from a poem by St. Therese of Lisieux, To the Sacred Heart

Novena to the Sacred Heart Day 8

Hide yourself in the Heart of Jesus; he is our refuge, our shelter, the house of the swallow, the nest of the turtledove, the barque of Peter to carry us over the stormy waters.

Image: Sacred Heart of Jesus embroidered "detente," shamelessly pinched from here.

I'm always on the hunt for new Sacred Heart images as you know, and this one represents a whole folk art form and pious practice I'd never heard of prior to this year. If you search Etsy or other such craft sites, you find tons of little embroidered Sacred Heart images known as "detentes."

The best I can find out about this is that in 1720, Venerable Ana Magdalena Rmuzat had a vision in which she was promised that anyone who wore an image of the Sacred Heart would be spared from the plague that has broken out in her city.

A "detente" refers to an embroidered image worn like a scapular, and it's not to be used as an amulet, but as a sacramental, worn as a reminder of Christ's love and as a sign of fidelity to him.

Here are two more samples, find tons of them here.

Personal photo, St. Mark's parish, Hyattsville, MD

I have been authorized to found a new religious family under the rule of Saint Augustine, under the name of the Little Brothers of the Sacred Heart of Jesus, for adoring night and day the Holy Eucharist in perpetual exposition, in the solitude of the cloister, in countries of mission, in poverty and work. I am collapsing under the weight of my blessings, of the vision of what I should be, of the vision of the good that I should do and of the good that would be done were I to be sanctified.
~St. Charles de Foucauld

Sacred Heart Month, Day 11

|

Personal photo, Basilica of St. Paul's Outside the Walls, Rome

If you're just joining, welcome to June and my vanity project to "share" all my collected images of the Sacred Heart from various travels and internet searches.

The love of Our Lord's Heart was in no way diminished by the treason of Judas, the flight of the apostles, and the persecution of his enemies. Jesus was only grieved at the harm they did themselves; his sufferings helped to assuage his grief because he saw in them a remedy for the sins committed by his enemies. The Sacred Heart was full of most tender love; there was no bitterness in it; no cruelty and injustice that he received moved it to feelings other than those of compassion and affection.  ~ St. Claude de la Colombiere, 1674

Day 10, Month of the Sacred Heart

|

Personal photo, St. Peter's in Point Pleasant Beach, NJ

To keep me from sin and straying from Him, God has used devotion to the Sacred Heart of Jesus in the Blessed Sacrament. My life vows destined to be spent in the light irradiating from the tabernacle, and it is to the Heart of Jesus that I dare go for the solution of all my problems. ~Pope St. John XXIII

Month of the Sacred Heart, Day 9

Personal photo: my neighbor's front door.

From a Protestant internet friend:

Before we believed, in 1970 my wife collapsed on the street in Quito; probably the altitude. People ran over, a doctor gave her a pill, and they picked her up and carried her into a convent on the May 24 (Quito independence day and my birthday) square; I sat there by her as she lay in front of a huge rendering of the Sacred Heart. It was incredibly peaceful and comforting.
