Remember the 30 headless bodies found in Baghdad last week? Left by Iraqi death squads in increasing control of the city? NYT reported on them March 27th. April Fools! Turns out it was just a rumor. Asked about it in a press briefing, Gen. Thurman replied:
what I would tell you -- we have not confirmed that report. We went to multiple sites to look for the 32 headless bodies that was reported to our headquarters, and we did not find anything; nor did any of the local citizens that were in these areas could verify that anybody had ever been in there. So I look at that report as completely false right now.
You can find a correction of sorts in paragraph 17 here (two days later). More at the Mudville Gazette, to which: curtsies. Still waiting for a reporter to lose his job for reporting stories made up out of whole cloth. If not, they should just rehire Jayson Blair and be done with it.
