John XXIII wasn't just portly and beloved --he also saved some 12,000 Hungarian Jews. WaTi has the story today --tainted only by an utterly gratuitous dig at Pius XII. (It's supposed to be damning that Pius didn't cable Msgr. Roncalli, stationed in Istanbul, with all his plans?)
