I apologize for not having more upbeat news on a Sunday evening. Instead, annoying topics, each of which has me saying, "Grrrr."
- I know it's just Huff-Po. I hate myself for getting sucked in, like every other blog on the right side o' the sphere. But can't we all agree that calling for a military coup in the United States eez, how you say, "out of the mainstream"? And anyway, I thought the Left's complaint was that America was too militaristic...now it wants the oligarchic command of the Joint Chiefs? Sigh. As we often say here: choose a side!
- When married men have crises, they leave their wives. When priests have crises, they tend to go heretical --I recall reading somewhere that the vast majority of heresiarchs --folks who start heresies-- are priests in their 40s. Paul VI, who endured the suffering of having to sign the papers laicizing so many priests & nuns commented to his secretary, Bishop McGee on that experience,
"They prayed little."
That's all I can think of when I read stories like this, about an Australian bishop who's let the heat get to him. Being lauded as a hero in the press, natch.
- And finally, Time reported last week that RU-486 (the abortion-inducing pill) is "safe." Michelle Gress fills us in on that excellent bit of journalism. The FDA had to violate its own rules to approve it in the first place, but that's another story. For now let's concentrate on this:
As of last year, when the FDA provided information to the Subcommittee for its investigation, RU-486 had caused the deaths of at least eight women, nine life-threatening incidents, 232 hospitalizations, 116 blood transfusions, and 88 cases of infection. In total, we knew of more than 1070 adverse event cases associated with RU-486, out of only 575,000 prescriptions at most.
As a bonus, the only company that makes it imports it from China, known for its keen attention to the health & safety of American consumers. But who cares? --say it with me now-- they're only women.
