On learning that there's not that much butter left while waiting for oatmeal to boil:
4-yr-old: I'm hopeless. (Indeed, he does sound despairing.)
Me: Hopeless!
4-yr-old: Mom, what does "hopeless" mean?
Me: It means you don't believe anything good can ever happen again.
4-yr-old: (considers a bit) Mom, I'm only a little bit hopeless.
