30 Days of the Sacred Heart, Day 21

Image: Sacred Heart of Jesus embroidered "detente," shamelessly pinched from here

I'm always on the hunt for new Sacred Heart images as you know, and this one represents a whole folk art form and pious practice I'd never heard of prior to this year. If you search Etsy or other such craft sites, you find tons of little embroidered Sacred Heart images known as "detentes."

The best I can find out about this is that in 1720, Venerable Ana Magdalena Rmuzat had a vision in which she was promised that anyone who wore an image of the Sacred Heart would be spared from the plague that has broken out in her city.

A "detente" refers to an embroidered image worn like a scapular, and it's not to be used as an amulet, but as a sacramental, worn as a reminder of Christ's love and as a sign of fidelity to him.

Here are two more samples, find tons of them here
