Relax, They Weren't Going To Blow You Up Right Away

The Formerly Grey Lady has an interesting article about the foiled London plane bombs. It's worth reading, in spite of the fact I get the impression its purpose is to make the whole thing look like an overreaction:
Despite the charges, officials said they were still unsure of one critical question: whether any of the suspects was technically capable of assembling and detonating liquid explosives while airborne.
A chemist involved in that part of the inquiry, who spoke on the condition of anonymity because he was sworn to confidentiality, said HMTD, which can be prepared by combining hydrogen peroxide with other chemicals, “in theory is dangerous,” but whether the suspects “had the brights to pull it off remains to be seen.”
While officials and experts familiar with the case say the investigation points to a serious and determined group of plotters, they add that questions about the immediacy and difficulty of the suspected bombing plot cast doubt on the accuracy of some of the public statements made at the time.

RTWT and you'll see the conspirators certainly thought they were going to blow some planes up. They had the intent, the materials and the recipe. They recorded death videos explaining that they wish to kill you because you live the Western lifestyle and pay taxes to your government (I sense a novel defense for tax evasion cropping up). I'm not it sure changes anything that their plans might not have been for August. And anyway, I for one am tired of things said by people who speak
on the condition of anonymity because. . . sworn to confidentiality

Isn't such a person telling you his word isn't his bond on the face of things? (Obviously I don't oppose anonymity. . .just anonymity for the sake of damaging government policy without losing one's job and bennies collected for advancing cause of same.)

And while I'm on the Times' case, ninme found this response to the FGL's comments that those two Fox reporters were released unharmed. Said FGL:
Two journalists kidnapped in Gaza were released unharmed today after being forced at gunpoint to say on a videotape that they had converted to Islam.

Says Mere Rhetoric:
Being forced to convert is a harm. It might be the oldest harm short of death - being forced to renounce your faith and your god. Millions of people - literally millions - have died rather than deign to utter words that would force them to give up their faith. No wonder liberal journalists are utterly baffled by fully half of the United States - they don't think having to give up your religion is harmful.

Says I: Isn't this the same FGL that thinks it's a harm even to see a creche or be told "Merry Christmas?"
